High-speed Train Tilting Mechanisms - Fitted with Custom Milwaukee Hydraulic Cylinders …

Milwaukee Cylinder was chosen to design and manufacture a custom hydraulic cylinder functioning as the tilting mechanism on high-speed trains. The new high-speed train service was designed to compete with Airline Service as the primary means of travel within the northwest corridor of the United States. One stipulation of the project was the mandatory use of existing track, which is narrower than track engineered for high-speed trains. In order to reach speeds of 150 mph while mantaining passenger comfort, we developed a cylinder that could extend and retract a precise distance, allowing the cabin of the train to tilt in either direction. Equally as important, the cylinder also required an additional isolated circuit functioning to automatically return the train to the neutral position under emergency situations; such as the loss of primary circuit pressure.

The tilt system compensates a maximum of 75% of the lateral force felt by the passengers when running through a curve, and becomes fully active above 60 mph. The tilt system is accommodated by a tilting bolster, which is suspended from the truck frame by four swing arms. The tilting is hydraulically actuated by an under floor hydraulic power unit. Each car has a tilt control processing unit and tilts independently of the others by up to 6.5 degrees either side of vertical. Tilt functions are controlled by the tilting master sensor and master controller located in the power car.
